Less firewood – more climate protection

Our project area is located in the rural Bugasera district in Rwanda. Cooking is traditionally carried out on thermally inefficient three-stone-fires, which leads to incomplete combustion and the production of large amounts of indoor air pollution.

Our disseminated improved cook stoves are produced locally in Rwanda and therefore creating valuable jobs. Household that are using our stoves only need around 1/3 of firewood they used before as one consequence, less CO2 emits into the air.

The burden of accessing firewood – almost always fall on women and girls, as they are responsible for cooking family meals in most rural communities. Without nearby, safely accessible natural resources, women and girls often travel long distances to find sufficient firewood to cook for their families. Children use the time save i.e. to learn for school; women use it i.e. to generate additional family incomes.

CARBON

120,000 tons of CO2 avoided
68,000 tons less clearings of local forests
70 % less consumption of firewood compared to the traditional 3-stones-fires

SOCIAL

1.2 million hours saved as less firewood is needed
77,000 people reached through our project
Improved life conditions for 38,000 children

HEALTH

31,000 less smoke poisonings
13,000 cases of asthma avoided
12,000 cases of respiratory diseases avoided (lung/bronchia)
